When We Entertain A Distorted View of God Are We Venturing Into Idolatry or Are We Harboring Heresy? By Dr. James Woods, Sr.

20140416-151748.jpgAre those who adjust their views of God to what they desire rather then recognizing that they are to adjust to who God really is, practicing idolatry?

The three major “idols” that are worshipped today are Possessions, Prestige, and Power.

Three prevailing heretic practices today are:
1. Viewing God as a “Cosmic Bellhop” who is ready to serve our every need when ever we call him up.
2. Viewing God as a “Spiritual Grandfather” who is ready to do anything to keep his children happy.
3. Viewing God as “Benevolent Banker” who stands ready to give his treasure to all who apply.

The only way to a clear view of God is to come to know Him through the study of His character, His attributes, as He has revealed them in Scripture.

The way to a clear view of God is to come to the realization that ALL of God’s attributes operate in unison. There are no lesser or greater attributes of God for God is not divided!

We know God through knowing His Character and there are three primary sources of revelation concerning the character of God:
l God’s creation, nature (Psalm 19:1-6; Romans 1:18-20),
l God’s Son (John 1:14-18; Hebrews 1:1-3), and
l God’s Word (Psalm 19:7-14; 119; 2 Peter 1:3-4)

The study of the attributes of God makes no allowance for casual bystanders. We are to either respond in worship and service, or turn from God, creating a “lesser god”; a god of our own making, a “god” in whom we feel comfortable, a god who is our servant not one whom we are to serve. Let us be diligent in the study of who God is, and may we do it with great zeal, with our eyes open wide to what this study will require of us.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10 KJV).

  1. Wow, your commentary goes parallel with our Sunday School lesson for May 18th. Yes, it is so important for us, as Believers, to know who God is. I say yes, we are engaging in a form of idolatry if we worship any one of the Three P’s.
