We Proclaim Christ!

Colossians 1:27-28 states in part: “…Christ in you, the hope of glory: {28} Whom we preach…”

The world is looking for significance, safety, security, and satisfaction. The world is listening to philosophies, religious creeds, and psychological pronouncements that soothe their troubled hearts and make bad people try to be good. The world views Christianity as a philosophical system, a mystical practice, a religious creed, a celestial money tree, or a collection of rules and regulations. Christianity is none of these. Christianity is a Person, and that Person is Jesus Christ. He is the only One able to give one significance, safety, security, satisfaction, and most importantly salvation.

We don’t preach a psychology. We don’t preach a philosophy; we don’t preach creeds or a system of rules and regulations. We don’t preach conformity to a system of behavior. We preach Christ in whom we have redemption through His Blood, even the forgiveness of sins (Col. 1:14).

We Preach Christ, Supreme. His Supremacy is clearly expressed in Col. 1:15-18. He is “…the image of the invisible God…” (v. 15a): He is the exact imprint of God; essentially and absolutely the perfect visible representation, expression and manifestation of the invisible God. He is the reflection and the revelation of God.

He is “…the firstborn of every creature:” (v. 15b); not in the sense of being the “first” to be born, but being the expression of His priority to, and His preeminence over, creation. He has supreme authority over all creation “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” (v. 16).

He is “…before all things and by Him all things consist.” (v. 17): His existence is before all things – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. {2} The same was in the beginning with God. {3} All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:1-3). Christ holds all things together; He maintains harmony and order. All things are created by Him and are controlled by Him. Apart from Christ all things would disintegrate: He holds the stars in their courses, He directs the planets in their orbits, and He established the laws of the universe.

He is “…the head of the body, the church:” (v. 18a) – As Jesus Christ has all authority in heaven and earth, How much more should He be supreme in His Church. He alone, and no one else directs, controls, guides, and governs His church. The church is His body; He is its source and its life.

He is “…is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead;” (v. 18b): We must be careful to emphasize that this does not mean that the Lord Jesus was the first to rise from the dead. But the Lord Jesus was the first to rise from the dead To Die No More, He was the first to rise with a glorified body, and He rose as the Head of a new creation. His resurrection is unique, and is the pledge that all who trust in Him will also be resurrected. This proclaims Him as supreme in the spiritual creation. – “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept” (1 Cor 15:20). “Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.” (Rom 6:9).

We Preach Christ, Sufficient. He is our peace – “…having made peace through the blood of his cross” (v. 20a). He is our reconciliation and the reconciliation of all things – “…by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven” (v. 20b). He is our righteousness – “to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight” (v. 22b).

We Preach Christ, Subject Of Our Surrender. Our union with Christ in His death, resurrection, and exaltation is the foundation upon which our earthly life must be built (Col. 3:1–4: ” If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Because of our death with Christ, we must regard ourselves as dead to the old sins and put them aside (Col. 3:5–11);

Because of our resurrection with Christ, we must regard ourselves as alive to Him in righteousness and put on the new qualities that are prompted by Christian love (Col. 3:12–17).
