The Holy Spirt and His Relation to the Lost by Dr. James Woods.

The Holy Spirt and His Relation to the Lost

Is clearly presented through the following verses: John 6:44; Ephesians 2:12; Luke 19:10

Let’s consider how the Holy Spirit connects with people who haven’t yet found their way to faith.

First off, when we talk about the “Holy Spirit,” we’re talking about a real Person, not just a feeling or a force. That’s why we use “He” and “Him.”

Think of it like a team effort within God:

 * God the Father came up with the awesome plan for us to be saved.

 * God the Son (that’s Jesus!) actually paid the price to make that salvation possible.

 * God the Spirit is the one who brings that salvation to us, making it real in our lives.

So, what does the Holy Spirit actually do for someone who’s “lost” or hasn’t connected with God yet?

I. He shows us what’s wrong (John 16:8)

 * A. He opens our hearts (Acts 16:14): Imagine your heart is like a closed door. The Holy Spirit gently knocks and helps that door creak open, making you more receptive to new ideas.

 * B. He turns on the light (Psalm 119:130; Genesis 1:2): It’s like being in a dark room and suddenly someone flips a switch. Things that were blurry or hidden become clear. He helps us see things about ourselves and God that we couldn’t before.

 * C. He points out our mistakes (John 16:8-11): He helps us realize the things we’ve done wrong, the ways we’ve messed up, and the gap between us and God. This isn’t to make us feel bad forever, but to show us we need a solution.

 * D. He urges us to turn to Jesus (Hebrews 3:7; Genesis 6:3; Romans 1:24): Once we see our need, the Holy Spirit nudges us, encouraging us to look to Jesus as the answer. It’s like a friendly hand pointing in the right direction.

II. He introduces us to Jesus as our Rescuer and Leader (Matthew 16:17; 1 Corinthians 12:3)

The Holy Spirit helps us understand who Jesus really is – not just a historical figure, but the one who can save us and be in charge of our lives.

III. He gives us the ability to believe in Jesus (Romans 10:17; Ephesians 2:8)

Believing isn’t just something we do on our own. The Holy Spirit actually puts faith in our hearts, making it possible for us to trust in Jesus.

IV. He washes away our past mistakes (Revelation 1:5, 6)

When we turn to Jesus, the Holy Spirit helps cleanse us from all the wrong we’ve done, making us fresh and new.

V. He makes us into brand new people (2 Corinthians 5:17)

It’s like a complete makeover from the inside out. We’re not just improved versions of ourselves; we become truly new creations.

VI. He connects us to the “family” of believers (1 Corinthians 12:13)

When we believe, the Holy Spirit brings us into God’s family, connecting us with other people who believe in Jesus, forming a spiritual community.

VII. He gives us a new way of living and a new reason to celebrate (2 Peter 1:4; 2 Chronicles 29:27; Psalm 137:1-4)

With the Holy Spirit living in us, we get a new way of thinking, acting, and feeling – a new nature. And along with that comes a deep joy and a desire to praise God, a “new song” in our hearts.
